The Velocity Adventure Program

The National Crime Prevention Centre (NCPC) is located within the Community Safety and Partnership Branch of the Department of Public Safety Canada. The NCPC contributes to the federal government’s leadership role in preventing and reducing crime, primarily through administering the National Crime Prevention Strategy. As part of its current mandate, the NCPC funds evidence-based interventions to reduce criminal activity among at-risk youth. The Adventure Youth Initiative, now known as the Velocity Adventure Program, has been identified as a promising intervention aimed at reducing anti-social behaviour, increasing attachment to school and reducing substance use. NCPC funding for Velocity covers a three-year period ending August 31, 2012.

The scope of this evaluation is to determine the effectiveness of Velocity in reducing the risk factors targeted by the program. The start date of this evaluation is March 2010 and extends beyond the end of the project itself and ends in November 2013 in order to allow for a longitudinal follow-up of the participants. The evaluation will involve extensive qualitative and quantitative data collection in order to assess process, impacts, and cost-effectiveness of Velocity.
